Debate: US withdrawal from Vietnam
From Debatepedia
[Edit] Background and contextThis debate was given surprising relevance in the 2008 US presidential elections when John McCain asserted that it was a mistake for the United States to withdraw from Vietnam, asserting that this led to the US-defeat, when a "victory" of some sorts might have been possible. This assertion was of particular important, not simply because John McCain was running for president, but because he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for nearly six year, offering him credibility in making such a statement. It was also of relevance in the context of his presidential campaign during the War in Iraq, where his policy has been to stay the course in Iraq. The interpretation that the Vietnam War could and should have been won provides a very strong basis for continuing the course War in Iraq. |
