Debate: Should the UK split up?
From Debatepedia
[Edit] Should the UK be abolished and in its place England and several Celtic nations arise? |
[Edit] Background and contextThe UK is a union of several historic nations, the most famous of which are England, Scotland and Wales. After a few centuries of union, secessionist feelings are running higher than ever among the peoples of these various nations. It's not only the Scots and the Welsh who want to leave- many English see independence as the best way to solve the West Lothian question, and also other smaller ethnic groups such as the Shetlanders and Orkneyans feel little cultural ties to the others. Celtic languages are being revived, even Cornish and Manx, which were until relatively recently completely dead languages and many did not even know that they existed. But, if you weigh up all the pros and cons, is it a very practical idea for these various territories to split up and become separate nations? |
