Should "GNU/Linux" be used instead of "Linux" to describe the full system?

Background and context

The GNU/Linux naming controversy has greatly affected relationships between the Free Software and Open Source Software communities. The controversy is over an operating system made up of different pieces software. The most prominent of these pieces are the GNU Toolkit and the Linux kernel. The question behind this debate is whether the operating system in question should be called "Linux" or "GNU/Linux".

Does the GNU Project deserve credit for the success of this Operating System?

• The system started as the GNU Project. Linux is just the kernel of GNU/Linux and only makes up approximately .1% of the entire system. It was was added after the majority of the GNU had been developed and calling the system "Linux" would exclude credit from the GNU project, which did the majority of the work in creating it.

• Linux is not part of the GNU project. It was never affiliated with GNU, and is it's own operating system. The Linux system uses parts of the GNU Toolkit, which is not an operating system and does not deserve the credit that it is trying to give to itself.
