[Edit] Background and contextCage fighting is a form of mixed martial arts that involves the use of nearly any punch, kick, knee, elbow, or hold. It allows the use of striking and grappling techniques, which can be used while standing or on the ground. Many consider it to be more violent and bloody than boxing. And, this has caused significant opposition by some groups, which are often the same ones that call for banning boxing. The sport is experiencing an increase in popularity, rivials professional wrestling and boxing for pay-per-view ratings. Organizations such as the UFC, WEC, IFC, and Strikeforce have helped turn MMA into a mainstream sport. |
